Visited Aug 1987

Cairnfauld may have been a recumbent stone circle, but so little of it has survived it is difficult to tell. Although Burl seems to suggest that four stones exist, when we visited in 1987 we could find only three stones, two standing, and one fallen. As the fallen stone has obviously been moved, it is very difficult to get any idea of the layout of the original monument. There are records of some of the stones being moved, and of the discovery of human bones in the nineteenth century. With so little to see, Cairnfauld is definitely only for the fanatical circle visitor.
