Described as a wedge tomb, Knocknagoun has the "capstone resting on backstone" arrangement more normally seen in the predominantly northern portal tombs. The orthostats supporting the backstone have partially collapsed causing its inclined position today. It may be that the capstones originally had the more usual abutted arrangement, and that the overlap seen today is due to later disturbance. As usual, the wider open end of the tomb faces west, there was no sign of a closing slab. Although there were some small boulders in the grassy area surrounding the tomb, we could not make out the extent of the original covering mound.
