Mnajdra - Temple 1

Click on the lines for a close-up photo.

The west face of the eastern flanking stone of the axial apse screen.
The top of this face has been decorated with the pitting method employed so widely in Temple 2.
Lower down the face are several lines of pits which all originate from the front edge of the stone.
The pit arrangement here is much more linear than the decoration and the pits themselves are smaller.

The significance of the lines is unknown but there have been suggestions that they may be a kind of calendar,
or perhaps records of some kind of astronomical observations.
