The floor of the
"sanctuary" area.
This area has a raised platform constructed after the main pebble floor of the
monument was
laid down. The most visible feature today is the large sill slab that fronts the
platform on its boundary
with the main chamber area. This stone (No.33) was actually found in front of
the southern side chamber
and was relocated here by the 1920's excavators as they thought that it matched
an impression here.
There were three loose slabs found in the chamber (Nos. 22,33 and 39), and
although this one was found
located directly in front of the southern chamber it was not considered as a
possible closure for that chamber,
instead No.22 found near the chamber segmenting stones was appointed this function.
Within the floor of the "sanctuary" the excavators discovered a stone
lined cyst located roughly where there
appears to be some stones in centre foreground of the above photo, and a small
pit located where the
broken quern (edge just visible far left corner above) stood during our visit.
Note the small standing stone or "betyle" hiding behind the northern
jamb stone upper left.
