The alcove in the walling
visible in the centre of this photo is modern, it is intended to allow
viewing of the cupmarks on the large side stone of the southern side-chamber.
Twenty-four cups have been found on the outer surface of this stone, but most of
them were
originally buried out of sight within the walling here. Click
for a close up shot.
This stone was probably part of an earlier megalithic structure, which has been reused in the
construction of the passage grave. The carvings were part of an earlier
tradition that had no
significance to the passage grave builders, so they used this decorated
stone as a simple structural
element without any regard to the display of its cup-marks.
