This fisheye shot shows the
two stones supporting the entrance lintel, the lintel itself is just visible
top of shot.
The northern stone (right) is a modern replacement for the original which was
probably removed as part of the
final sealing of the tomb in prehistory. The second stone in the north side of
the passage is also modern, fragments
of the original were discovered during excavation and it is thought to have been
broken when the lintel fell as a result
of the removal of the outer stone.
A section of dry stone walling is visible between the two new stones, and the
investigation of this area in 1996
revealed that this walling was in fact the outer facade of the primary cairn
curving in to meet an earlier entrance.
This was a very important finding as it meant that passage had been extended by
2.4m after initial construction,
and that the primary cairn had been enlarged to accommodate this change.
