La Hougue Bie - interior

The small "betyles" on the "sanctuary" platform behind the northern jamb stone.
Two small standing stones or "betyles" were discovered in this corner, one is still erect today
but it looks as though the northernmost stone has fallen. Another "betyle" was discovered behind
the southern jamb stone and yet another in the terminal chamber.
The significance of these tiny menhirs is unknown but their positions in the niches behind the
jamb stones mean they are only visible to people in the sanctuary area, they are completely concealed
from all other areas of the monument.
